A woman was arrested for allegedly “throwing a bicycle” during a protest against anti-LGBT + violence in Amsterdam, and shouting that the protesters are “cancerhomos”.
According to NL time, Thursday’s (August 26) protest was in solidarity with residents of a student building that was set on fire in an alleged anti-LGBT + attack.
Police suspect the blaze, which left four people injured, was caused by arson targeting LGBT + Pride flags displayed in the building.
About a thousand people attended the protest, but a 40-year-old woman decided to insult the protesters.
Local media reported that several protesters called the police after the woman threatened them, and some reported online that she called them “kankerhomos,” which translates to “cancerhomos” or “cancer gays,” and spat on them.
A participant also told Amsterdam TV station AT5 that a physical altercation erupted after the woman threw her bicycle at the participants in the march.
Police confirmed that a woman was arrested that evening and an investigation was underway.
Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema “will never accept the terrible intolerance” of LGBT + people
At Thursday’s protest, Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema delivered a speech outside the building targeted by the alleged anti-LGBT + attack.
She said: “There is no excuse for the horrific arson attack here last week. I want to thank all of you for coming here.
“In solidarity with all for whom the rainbow flag symbolizes and to show that we will not tolerate it.”
Halsema said everyone must continue to fight for equality, “in classrooms, living rooms, in social organizations and businesses, in the squares of our cities and wherever ‘gay’ is still used as an abusive word ”.
She added: “We cannot and must not accept that LGBT + people are intimidated and that violence is used against them. And we cannot and must never accept the terrible intolerance behind this. “
