Why is he called the “butcher of Amsterdam”?

Manchester United announced on Sunday that they had agreed to sign Lisandro Martinez of Ajax.

United have agreed to pay £57m for the Argentine’s services, according to the BBC.

Martinez will join the club when a medical is completed and the players’ terms are finalized.

Martinez will reunite with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. The two worked side by side at Ajax, with Ten Hag leading Martinez to bring the defender to Amsterdam in 2019.

Martinez is only 5ft 9in tall. It’s short for a central defender.

However, despite his stature, Martinez earned the nickname ‘The Butcher of Amsterdam’ during his three-year stint at Ajax.

So why is this?

Martinez is a tenacious defender who isn’t afraid to ram into players and throw his weight.

And footage, compiled by YouTuber user KaiiZoFilms, shows him doing just that. The 12-minute video, titled ‘Lisandro Martinez Too Small? OK, WATCH THIS!’ shows that its size will not be a problem at all.

United have spent a lot of money on Martinez but he could be worth every penny.

Speaking about his nickname, Martinez said, according to the Mirror: “Yes, my name is the carnicero – The butcher of Amsterdam. We Argentinians do everything with passion and when I go out on the pitch I fight for every balloon. If I have to step over dead bodies, I do it.

“I want to win every situation 50-50 because I know I’m fighting for food for every member of my family and for my friends. That’s the feeling I have – and all Argentinians have. That’s the kind of motivation I can’t explain.

“I received my talent from my mother. Besides her job, which was a very difficult job, she is also a good footballer. She still plays! He’s a fantastic midfielder, honestly. She’s older now, but she still plays.

He added: “Cannavaro was comfortable with the ball. And, despite his lack of height, he challenged for every ball as if it was the last tackle to win the game. I loved this style – and I’m like him.

If the deal is completed in the coming days, Martinez could make his United debut in their friendly against Aston Villa on July 23.
