Working with the best young players in the Netherlands, van de Looi is aware of what the future may hold for the senior Dutch team. He agrees that there is a lot of potential: “I’m happy with a lot of potential players. For example, we have now selected Devyne Rensch [for the U21s]. Yesterday I was talking to my captain, Dani de Wit, he said: “Coach, he is five years younger than me. I think it’s good – incredible even. “
We then asked van de Looi if the dark times were now over for the Oranje due to the quality of the young players, to which he replied: “When the players are selected for the national team, maybe they have to. be playing a bigger role. Right now only Matthijs De Ligt and Donyell Malen are the guys who really play a big role. I hope Gravenberch will be next.
“But there are also a lot of players whose role can hopefully be bigger in the future – for Koopmeiners, for Gakpo – they will do more minutes, will be more important, will be more decisive, then we can combine this with more experienced players. There are already some like Wijnaldum, Frenkie de Jong and Depay; I think we can have a great team in the years to come, yes.
