Rotterdam boy gifted playset battling cancer

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – State Farm has partnered with the Roc Solid Foundation to provide playsets to children battling cancer, including a local boy—Bennett, a six-year-old from Rotterdam. Bennett loves pigs, listening to music, and the colors orange and yellow. He is also undergoing treatment for Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), a rare form of cancer.

The sponsorship supports the nonprofit’s “Roc Solid on Demand” program, which provides playsets to families battling childhood cancer throughout the contiguous United States.

The family got all the gear and hardware, plus some Roc Solid swag Play Kits to make it a great day. State Farm then learned that they needed help building the structure. So local State Farm agents showed up at the family’s home in early September to build the playset and help Bennett and his siblings begin to make many happy memories in their own backyard. Also in attendance were State Senator Jim Tedisco and a representative from Congressman Paul Tonko’s office.

The mission of the Roc Solid Foundation is to bring hope to families battling childhood cancer, through the power of play. The organization believes that “play beats cancer” because when children play, cancer is the furthest thing from their minds. Additionally, with weakened immune systems during treatment, children battling cancer often cannot visit public places or interact with other children, so a backyard playset provides a safe place for them. and germ-free to play.

Roc Solid has been building backyard games since 2009, but since launching Roc Solid on Demand in 2020, the reach of the organization has grown significantly. They plan to provide at least 700 playsets to children battling cancer across the United States this year.

“State Farm has been an incredible partner for us,” says Eric Newman, founder of the Roc Solid Foundation and childhood cancer survivor. “We are very grateful for their continued support as this new program evolves, so that we can continue to provide play for children during a very difficult time.”

“Giving back to the communities where we live and work is a big part of who we are at State Farm,” adds State Farm Corporate Responsibility Analyst Jennifer Young. “We are thrilled to partner with Roc Solid and give Bennett a safe place to play and make memories with his family. Seeing Bennett smile as he plays on his new playset is the focus of this program.
