Composition of PSV vs Sparta Rotterdam and previous formations:
Things were looking good in the Eindhoven Garden when PSV started this season with four straight wins. During those outings, Roger Schmidt’s men – the last Eredivisie team to have a perfect record – have scored 14 goals and have conceded only three times. Then came Feyenoord’s visit and they then lost 0-4 at Philips Stadium, a result which saw PSV cede top spot to Ajax, but they recovered with a narrow 1-2 victory at Heracles but the last time. From Boeren suffered another loss. The league’s surprise package Willem II handed them a 2-1 defeat and before Matchday 8 PSV are four points behind Erik ten Hag’s side and will look to avoid back-to-back league defeats, which they have not known since. October 2019 (3-0 in Utrecht and 0-4 against AZ). As for the back-to-back home defeats in Eredivisie, we have to go back to early 2014, when Groninegn (2-3) and Feyenoord (0-2) humiliated them.
This will be a big demand for Sparta, who has only returned to Rotterdam with six wins in Eredivisie’s 54 previous visits to PSV’s home, and the most recent of those successes came in December 1995 when Phillip Cocu, Ronaldo and Luc Nilis stood in line for the hosts. That day, Henk ten Cate’s men went from 1-0 to 1-2 winners; a match that saw Dennis de Nooijer equalize before scoring the winner with 23 minutes remaining. Since then, there have been 13 losses in 14 games played, the only exception being a 1-1 draw in February 2010, Rydell Poepon saved a point for the visitors in the 90th minute. With the approach of this last confrontation, Sparta is found in 13th place after seven games played. Henk Fraser’s men have managed only one win so far this season and it happened on Matchday 4 when they beat Fortuna Sittard who currently backs the young league table.

Player to watch: Cody Gakpo (PSV Eindhoven)
It was no shock to see Cody Gakpo in Louis van Gaal’s preliminary squad for the Netherlands World Cup qualifiers against Latvia and Gibraltar. The talented young Dutch striker seized his opportunity in the final round of WCQ 2022 international matches when he scored Oranje’s debut goal against Montenegro. He has since carried that momentum into PSV’s internal affairs and enters Matchday 8 after scoring two goals and creating four more. His productivity nests him well in this season’s quest for the crown of “wizard king”. As it stands, only Steven Berghuis (6) and current carrier Dusan Tadic (5) have been more creative than him. When it comes to the odds created by 90, no PSV player has eclipsed Gakpo (2.7), who will certainly want to face a lacking Confidence Sparta side.
