Okoye saves point for Sparta as Iwobi loses on Everton return
The two Nigerian stars were in action for their respective clubs, but they both had contrasting fortunes with the return of domestic league football.
Maduka Okoye was excellent in goals again as Sparta Rotterdam drew 1-1 against Groningen in their Eredivisie clash at Sparta Stadion Het Kasteel on Sunday afternoon.
Okoye came on after his brilliant performance in Sparta’s 2-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven just before the international break.
He continued where he left off as his two saves, including one inside the box, helped the home side score a point.
Groningen took the lead in the 29th minute thanks to Cyril Ngonge, but Bryan Smeets tied the score for Sparta five minutes later.
The away team almost regained the lead a few minutes later, but Okoye made an impressive save to seal a point for his team.
Meanwhile in England Alex Iwobi returned from injury but Everton’s home streak came to an end after a 1-0 loss to West Ham.
Iwobi had missed the Toffees’ trip to Old Trafford due to an injury which also prevented him from appearing in Nigeria’s games against the Central African Republic.
However, he was back in the lineup against the Hammers, but he couldn’t prevent the loss of Rafael Benitez.
Iwobi was 79 minutes into the game, but he couldn’t help Everton’s cause, missing a big chance and firing two shots off target.
Angelo Ogbonna’s header from a corner in the 74th minute was all West Ham needed to get the most points.
