Tom Latham on Saturday broke the record for the highest individual ODI score achieved on a birthday that previously belonged to legendary Indian striker Sachin Tendulkar. New Zealand beat the Netherlands by 118 points on Saturday as the hosts took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-game ODI series here in Hamilton. Tom Latham was the architect of victory. New Zealand were in dire straits against keen opponents, down to 89/6 from 23 overs. However, Latham played the ultimate captain’s shot, his 123 ball 140* reviving the hosts and eventually taking them to a mammoth 264/9.
His shot – it was his career-best score in ODI cricket – consisted of 10 fours and five sixes. It was his birthday, and he couldn’t have sounded better in his thirties.
With the unbeaten 140 on April 2, Tom Latham broke Sachin Tendulkar’s 24-year-old record for the highest ODI score achieved on a birthday. Tendulkar had a 134-point run on his birthday in 1998.
Another Kiwi batter, Ross Taylor, is third on the list of players who scored a big ODI score on their birthday, having made 131 runs in 2011.
Sanath Jayasuriya is number four having completed 130 runs in 2008 while Vinod Kambli scored 100 runs on his birthday in 1993.
