Flood warning in effect for Schoharie and Canajoharie creeks; Minor flooding expected, according to the National Weather Service

ALBANY – The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Schoharie Creek at Gilboa Bridge and Canajoharie Creek near Canajoharie as minor flooding occurs and is expected.

The warning is set to last through late Friday afternoon for Canajoharie Creek and Friday evening for Schoharie Creek in Gilboa, the service said.

Canajoharie Creek was at 8.8 feet at 8:16 a.m. Friday. Flood stage 8.0 feet ago. The creek had been as high as 9.9 feet.

The service predicts the creek will fall below flood stage late Friday morning and will continue to fall to 3.5 feet Friday afternoon.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office also reported several roads closed Thursday night due to flooding.

Schoharie Creek in Burtonsville remained in the minor flood category at less than 8 feet. The moderate flood height there is 8 feet. Flood level is 6 feet.

The Gilboa Bridge creek was at 18.4 feet at 9:15 a.m. Friday. Flood level there is 17.0 feet. The moderate flood level is 19.0 feet, the service said. The river had already peaked at 19.6 feet.

The creek was expected to drop below flood stage late Friday afternoon and continue to drop to 12.5 feet Monday morning.
