The Netherlands has established itself as one of the most creative and innovative countries in managing the strong development of renewable energies and, at the same time, a growing number of grid capacity issues. This week, Dutch start-up We Drive Solar and Korean conglomerate Hyundai announced a plan to roll out 500 EV charging stations with two-way technology in the city and region of Utrecht.

Thanks to the charging stations, electric vehicles will not only be recharged but also will supply energy to the grid during the storage of renewable energy. on a large Scale is no longer needed. The stations will initially be tested on Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 car, which is equipped with two-way charging technology. “In the beginning 2022, the number of cars [will be] scaled up to 150 two-way shared cars in Utrecht, ”the two companies said in a statement.

The project includes standardization and integration of protocols, software control of charging stations, scientific validation of the proposed “two-way ecosystem”, large-scale application of two-way shared cars in a green urban district, and coupling of car-sharing reservations with two-way charging.

“The technical details of this project will be released later,” said a spokesperson for We Drive Solar. pv magazine.

The Dutch company and Hyundai announced their partnership to bring this two-way solution to owners of photovoltaic systems in mid-April.

We Drive Solar is also participating in the € 3.3 million “Robust” research project aimed at providing more flexibility to the congested Dutch electricity grid. Among the project partners, there are, Delft University of Technology, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, Utrecht Municipality and Arnhem Municipality.
