Akureyri – Amsterdam: direct flights to offer
Dutch travel agency Voigt Travel will be offering direct flights between Amsterdam and Akureyri, starting February 11. Morgunblaðið reports. This is a resumption of service that was offered in February and March 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Hjalti Þórarinsson, project manager for Flugklasinn Air 66N, a cooperation project between companies in the travel industry in North Iceland, Voigt Travel will offer the service twice a week for a period of five weeks.
The travel agency started offering direct flights between Amsterdam and Akureyri in the summer of 2019, and there are plans to offer such a service next summer as well.
“Sales have started well,” says Kristinn Þór Björnsson, Marketing Director of Visit Akureyri. Five weekend packages are currently on sale, in addition to single plane tickets. One of the weekend packages is already sold out.
“We are systematically working on increasing air service to and from Akureyri, which we see as a great sociological project,” says Kristinn. “It is in everyone’s interest to increase international flights through Akureyri Airport, and it is good news that construction of the airport is scheduled soon.”
He describes the packages offered as ideal for groups and businesses large and small. “Amsterdam is a major connecting airport with the rest of the world, and once there, the possibilities are endless,” he says. “Instead of driving all the way to Reykjavík, which involves extra effort and costs, this is an attractive route that more and more people are taking advantage of.”
